Intro
I am a person of many hats with a passion for social good.
My work is motivated by human empowerment. I believe the most important problem faced by humanity is the loss of individual human autonomy caused by empowerment of collectives, be them states, corporations, etc. I study cooperation and social phenomena both to understand how to improve social well-being, but also to understand how to prevent collectives from abusing the tools for cooperation and disempowering humans. A recent opinion paper lays down part of this argument.
In my research I use a combination evolutionaty game theory, multi-agent reinforcement learning and agent-based modelling with or without large language models (LLMs). My research is a little bit akin to Isaac Asimov's fictional Psychohistory where statistical models are used to understand the consequences that interventions will have on the course of human history.
On the engineering side, I've worked on a variety of projects. One example is Google Search, where I designed the first machine learning system for selecting the index of images for Image Search . Another example is the launch of the voice for the Google Assistant based on neural networks. Finally, I also worked on improving the profitability of wind energy by roughly 20% using machine learning.
I have a passion for communication and development. Yes, that is me in Google's official interview training video . But I also like communicating my research to a broader audience. For example, here is an overview talk I gave a few years back. I've been an invited speaker in many venues, including the University of Oxford, Harvard University, the Smithsonian Institute, and many more.
